On the fast track to track geometry

High-precision measuring with no minimum speed

What is Plasser InertialGeometry?

To assess track geometry quality during inspection runs as well as following maintenance, the inertial measurement unit (IMU) records and analyses the most important track parameters. The unit can be integrated into different vehicle platforms, from track maintenance machines to measuring cars, and ensures the track geometry is completely measured.

The non-contact track geometry measuring system records the actual track geometry by means of 3D space curves. As a result, deviations are immediately visible.

This modularly expandable system is already in operation on more than 200 machines around the globe, allowing for optimal integration into track inspection workflows as well as worksite logistics on tamping and maintenance machines.

Benefits

  • Track geometry measurement in accordance with EN 13848
  • Can be used during regular train operation at up to 300 km/h without line closure
  • GPS ensures the highest precision for locating measuring data
  • Highly accurate measurement under real conditions (with real axle load)
  • Highest accuracy irrespective of the direction of travel and speed
  • Wavelength ranges: D1 (3 to 25 m), D2 (25 to 70 m), D3 (70 to 150-200 m)
  • No minimum speed necessary
  • Stop-and-go operation possible

Plasser InertialGeometry – High Speed

  • Optical gauge measuring system (non-contact)
  • Measuring of the track geometry possible at up to 300 km/h (the actual speed depends on the maximum speed of the carrier vehicle)
  • Can be used on track inspection vehicles and tamping machines
  • Plasser ReferencedGeometry extension possible
  • Wavelength ranges: D1, D2, D3
  • Complies with EN 13848-2 and -3

Plasser InertialGeometry

  • Complies with EN 13848-2 and -3
  • Mechanical gauge measuring system
  • Pre- and post-measuring of the track geometry possible at up to 50 km/h
  • Can be used on tamping machines
  • Can be used on worksites
  • Wavelength ranges: D1, D2
  • Complies with EN 13848-3

Highest accuracy

Neither the high-speed nor the standard design requires an additional mechanical recorder measuring chord. This results in more compact designs and higher speeds. No matter which carrier vehicle is used, the system captures the interesting track geometry faults in accordance with EN 13848-1. If necessary, the measuring values can be transferred directly to the SmartALC automatic guiding computer to generate working parameters.

Interfaces

The track geometry measuring system is perfectly integrated into the track maintenance process. Interfaces to many modern databases allow track geometry data and working parameters to be transferred easily between planning tools and machines. All of the data collected is saved in combination with highly accurate position data (GNSS). This enables exact localization of the measuring data. The prepared track geometry data can be loaded directly to the machine from the cloud already while travelling to the worksite.

Plasser & Theurer offers a variety of digital measuring and assistance systems. Different factors determine whether it is possible to install them on a new machine, and if so, which solution is possible. These factors include the machine type, operating environment, and user scenarios. Implementation is reviewed on a project-specific basis.
