Non-destructive rail inspection
Vehicle-integrated ultrasonic inspection of rails
What is Plasser RailEcho?
Plasser RailEcho is a vehicle-integrated conventional ultrasonic testing system for the non-destructive inspection of rails.
Wheel-probe technology introduces ultrasonic signals into the rail and records reflections from internal discontinuities. The system detects and assesses defects within the rail head, web, and foot that cannot be identified through surface inspection alone.
Seamlessly combining advanced wheel probes, high-precision data acquisition electronics, and intelligent on-board software, Plasser RailEcho delivers highly accurate, position-referenced data through fully customizable interfaces. Built on Plasser’s trusted technology and proven operational expertise, Plasser RailEcho is engineered for the global stage — optimized to meet rigorous international railway standards and seamlessly integrate into the next generation of innovative track inspection vehicles.

Reliable inspection below the surface
Plasser RailEcho uses conventional pulse-echo ultrasonic inspection with wheel probes and multiple probe angles to inspect relevant areas of the rail cross-section.
Engineered for comprehensive internal inspection, Plasser RailEcho reliably evaluates structural variations deep within the rail head, web, and foot. It translates complex detection data into clear, actionable insights — giving you the exact information needed to optimize maintenance schedules and execute targeted verifications.
Integrated measurement
Plasser RailEcho combines sensor technology, data acquisition electronics, and software in one coordinated measuring system. Measuring signals are linked to the corresponding track position and can be displayed and evaluated as A-scan and B-scan information. Interfaces for position referencing, data exchange, and system synchronization support integration into vehicle-based diagnostic platforms and customer-specific evaluation and reporting environments.
Performance for different applications
Plasser RailEcho offers modular configurations for different vehicles and inspection speeds. The standard version uses one wheel-probe assembly per rail, while Plasser RailEcho Pro uses two interlaced 8-inch wheel-probe assemblies to maintain the required longitudinal sampling density at higher speeds.
Plasser RailEcho
Standard version for conventional ultrasonic rail inspection using one wheel-probe assembly per rail.
Designed for lower-speed applications, such as urban and light railway networks.
Plasser RailEcho Pro
High-speed version using two interlaced 8-inch wheel-probe assemblies per rail.
Designed for higher-speed applications, such as conventional railway lines.
